Glass repair covers a fair range of jobs, and the one you need comes down to what has actually failed. These are the ones we get called out for most across Ely and the villages around it.
Misted double glazing is one of the most common calls. The glass looks cloudy, wiping it does nothing, and that is because the seal has gone and damp is sitting between the two panes. The fix is insulated glass unit replacement. New sealed unit into the frame you have already got. If the glass stays clear but you are getting draughts or water round the edges, the gasket is the problem, and that comes under window seal repair.
Damage is the other half of it. A chip or a hairline crack that is holding steady is often just window glass repair. Once a pane has properly gone, whether that is a football, a break-in or a branch off a tree in a gale, you are into broken window repair and window crack repair. The damaged glass comes out and a new pane goes in. Window pane replacement on a standard casement is simple enough. Patio door glass replacement takes longer, because the units are big and heavy and the door usually has to come off its track.
Doors bring their own faults. Glass door repair covers the pane, and we will look at the lock, the hinges and the seals while we are there, because on a dropped door those tend to go together.
If it turns out the frames have had it and the glass is fine, we also fit replacement windows and doors across Ely, so you get one honest answer either way.
Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will come back with a price. No survey needed for a rough figure.
Some panes are past saving. A crack run right across, or a sealed unit that has misted and stayed misted, means glass replacement. The old pane comes out and a new one goes in, cut to fit the frame you already have. Frames, sills and your decoration all stay put. We work with uPVC, aluminium and composite. Nothing gets ordered until Dan has measured on site, because pane sizes shift street by street round Ely. The work is notifiable, and Dan signs it off himself as an Assure certified installer. Book Dan to measure up.
Broken window repair covers glass that has given way properly, a hole punched through it or a pane gone altogether. Storm damage is the common one, Ely sitting out in flat fen country with little to slow the wind, and breaks pick up through autumn and winter. First thing Dan checks is the frame. If it is still square and only the glass has gone, the damaged pane comes out and a new one goes in. Where somebody has forced a window, the lock has usually taken a knock too, so he looks at that while he is there. Ring Dan to make it safe.
A fair few window faults get put right with the glass staying exactly where it is. Chips and nicks are the common one. A shallow chip with no line running off it can sit there for years, and Dan would rather you kept an eye on it than paid for glass you do not need. Glass rattling in its frame is usually perished beads or packers, re-packed and settled back down. Handles, hinges and friction stays come under the same heading. Describe it to Dan first, and he can usually get a fair idea from that.
Some glass jobs will not wait. Ely is a short run down the A10 from our unit in Littleport, so if you ring Dan with an opening that is not safe, he will move things around and get across as soon as he can. The first job on arrival is making the opening safe, then measuring up. Common sizes can often go in there and then. Odd sizes and toughened or laminated glass have to be ordered in. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and we do not run a night service. If a window goes overnight, keep everyone clear of the glass and call Dan at eight in the morning.
Misted double glazing is one of the jobs we get called out to most around Ely. The seal round the edge of the unit has failed and let damp in between the panes, and once it is in there it stays. There is no drying it out or resealing from the outside. The old unit comes out and a new one goes in, and the frame stays exactly where it is. The replacement meets current Building Regulations for heat loss, so most people tell Dan the room feels warmer. Get your misted unit priced, one on its own is a perfectly normal job.
Send Dan a photo and he’ll give you a straight answer before anything’s quoted.
If you can feel a draught round a window, or get a damp patch on the sill after heavy rain, it is nearly always the seals. Window seal repair puts those right with the glass staying where it is. Sometimes the window has dropped or the keeps have worked loose, so it no longer pulls in tight, and an adjustment sorts that. Sometimes the gasket has hardened and pulled back at the corners. We always check for an adjustment before pulling any gaskets out. Worth looking at the trickle vents too, since a nudged-open vent is a common false alarm.
Glass door repair covers the pane and the bits that make the door work. The glass might have cracked or the unit misted through, and on a composite door the glazed panel can often come out and a new one goes in without touching the door itself. The door might have dropped on its hinges so you lean on it before the handle lifts, or the handle might lift with nothing throwing, usually the gearbox in the multipoint lock. We work on composite, aluminium and uPVC. Dan goes over the whole door while he is there, because a dropped door is what wears the lock out.
A sliding patio door that sticks or jumps its track is nearly always mechanical. We go through the track, the rollers and the alignment together, because a fault in one drags the others out. The bottom track fills with grit, the rollers wear flat, or the door drops on one side so the lock will not meet its keep. A fair few sticking doors come right with nothing more than a good clean. Where a clean does not do it, the rollers are next, which means lifting the door off its track. Clean the track first, then call Dan.
Some positions in a house have to have safety glass by law, and most people have no reason to know that until it comes up. Building Regulations set out where it goes in Approved Document K, mainly glass in a door up to 1500mm, panels beside a door, and low glass in a window or wall. Safety glass replacement means putting the right type into the frame you already have, cut to size. Toughened breaks into small blunt granules. Laminated holds together in the frame on a plastic interlayer. Which one suits depends on the position, so ask Dan what yours needs.
We also handle a fair bit beyond the sections above. That covers window glass replacement and window pane replacement, window crack repair, glass resealing, and sash window glass replacement, where the frame stays put and only the glass is swapped. We replace a misted or cracked conservatory pane too, roof panels and side units, though we do not build conservatories or fit roof lanterns.
On the bigger openings we do patio door glass replacement, bay window repair and sliding window repair. We fit new panels in glass balustrades and balcony glazing, repair office glass partitions, and replace fire-rated glass like for like. All of it for homes and business premises across Ely and the villages. Send Dan a photo either way and he will tell you which one yours is.
Every job’s different, but here’s a rough idea before you get in touch.
Questions People Ask

A repair if the fault is small, a chip, a nick, or a seal starting to go on one side. A full replacement if the pane is cracked right through or the sealed unit has failed beyond saving. Dan will tell you which applies once he has had a look, rather than pushing a full swap when a repair will do.
No. Once the seal between the panes has failed, the moisture is inside the unit and there is no drying it out or resealing it from the outside. The fix is a new sealed unit in the frame you have already got.
No, we work with uPVC, aluminium and composite. Worth saying up front so nobody books a visit that was never going to work out. If your frames are timber, Dan would rather tell you on the phone than on your doorstep.
From 7 working days once we’ve measured up. Standard sizes can sometimes come in quicker, and toughened or laminated glass, or anything non-standard, can take longer. Dan will give you a clearer idea for your job when he comes out.
