A lock that needs a wiggle, daylight showing round the frame, a door catching on the floor, a draught you can feel with it shut. Those are the ones we get called to most. Some come right with an adjustment or new hardware. Where the frame has moved past adjusting, a composite door installation is the tidier fix.

Behind the skin is a solid insulating core running the full thickness of the door. That does the thermal work, and it’s also what makes the slab rigid. Pick a composite door up and you’ll feel the weight in it.
The slab hangs in a reinforced outer frame. Composite door frames are typically uPVC with galvanised steel running through them, which is what carries the weight of the slab. That steel earns its place. It takes the weight of a heavy door and gives the multipoint lock something solid to throw into.
Worth knowing before installation day: a composite door is a good deal heavier than what most people are replacing. That’s why we spend the time packing and levelling the frame properly, particularly on older Ely openings that have gone out of square.

Cylinder snapping is the attack these doors get targeted with most, and TS007 is the British kitemark that tests a lock against it, alongside picking, bumping and drilling. It works on stars. A 3-star cylinder has passed all of that testing on its own. You can also reach three by pairing a 1-star cylinder with a 2-star security handle, since the stars add up.

A good cylinder deals with snapping. The multipoint gearbox inside the door is a separate part that wears on its own, and that’s usually what’s gone when a handle starts feeling spongy.
Hinges are flag hinges, fixed to the frame, with the frame bolted back into the brickwork. They’re adjustable, so a door that closes sweetly in June and starts catching by December can be brought back into line without touching the frame.
Most people have a colour in mind before they ring us. Anthracite grey, French navy, Chartwell green and black are the ones we’re fitting most on composite doors right now, and Chartwell green in particular suits the older streets around Ely.
